Urumqi Opens New Freight Routes to Paris and Madrid, Consolidates Xinjiang's Position as an Ope

Aug,04,2025 << 返 回

On the early morning of July 27th, a cargo plane operated by Air France took off from Urumqi Airport and sliced through the night sky of the northwest border. This A330-200F carrying 57 tons of cross-border e-commerce goods not only flew to Paris and Madrid, but also marked a crucial step in Xinjiang's opening-up to the outside world. As the first French airline to settle in Urumqi, the addition of Delta Air Lines has given this aviation hub in the core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt a heavier weight on the international map. The frequency arrangement of five flights per week on the new route reflects the strong market demand. The Madrid route operates four times a week and the Paris route operates one time a week. It is estimated that cross-border e-commerce goods can save 5 yuan in transportation costs per kilogram through this new channel. Based on an estimated annual cargo volume of 15 million kilograms, the cost savings alone amount to 75 million yuan. This is the 13th and 14th international cargo route opened by Xinjiang Airport Group in 2025, of which 12 are concentrated at Urumqi Airport. From a geographical perspective, these air routes are like radiating threads, connecting cities such as Almaty in Central Asia, Moscow in Europe, and Addis Ababa in Africa into a network. Especially with the newly opened Paris route, the handover of goods between China and France can be completed in 9 hours, saving nearly 20 hours compared to the traditional transit mode. This time advantage is crucial for high value-added products such as fresh produce and electronics. Previously, goods sent to Spain needed to be transshipped through Beijing or Shanghai, but now direct flights to Madrid only take 12 hours, saving 8 hours in customs clearance alone. The chain reaction brought about by this efficiency improvement is changing the regional economic pattern. The upcoming opening of new air routes such as Larnaca and Karachi in the second half of the year will further strengthen this air cargo network, making Urumqi's position as the golden channel between Asia and Europe more stable

As the "the Belt and Road" initiative enters its second decade, Xinjiang is changing from a geographical frontier to an open frontier. The facilitation measures implemented by airport customs, such as "early declaration and intelligent release inspection," have reduced the clearance time for cross-border e-commerce goods to within 3 hours. This "fast lane" model, coupled with continuously upgraded infrastructure such as freight runways and smart logistics parks, gives Urumqi full confidence in its journey to build an airport type national logistics hub. As the roar of the cargo plane engine gradually fades away, the thoughts left for us are far more than just the opening of a route. From the ancient Silk Road with the sound of camel bells to the silver winged aviation corridor, Xinjiang has always been a hub connecting the east and west. Nowadays, hundreds of international cargo flights take off and land here every week, like a modern version of the "steel camel caravan", carrying Chinese made goods to the world and returning to the motherland with global goods. This bidirectional air corridor is not only a logistics channel, but also a bridge for cultural exchange - it allows French red wine and Xinjiang red dates to meet on the shelves, and Spanish ham and Ili cheese to converse on the dining table. Perhaps this is the most vivid footnote of globalization: when goods begin to flow freely, the distance between people's hearts is no longer far away.
